To install the Blughozt controller into your FG Falcon, you will need the following items:
- X6 resistors
- Soldering iron and solder
- Wire strippers
- 12V test light (optional)
The installation process involves four main steps:
- Connect the tail lights to the Blughozt controller.
- Connect the power and ground wires to the Blughozt controller.
- Connect the trigger wires to the OEM harness.
- Connect the resistors to the OEM harness.
Step 1: Connect the tail lights to the Blughozt controller.
The tail lights have one plug each that goes directly into the Blughozt controller. The plug on the left side of the controller is for the left tail light, and the plug on the right side is for the right tail light. Make sure the plugs are securely inserted into the controller.
Step 2: Connect the power and ground wires to the Blughozt controller.
Please note whilst you can run the power to the power source in step 2 please ensure when soldering trigger wires and resistors, you have disconnected it from the fuse box or ground. NEVER perform modifications to the harness whilst the ghozt is receiving power. The benefit to powering the ghozt up first is that you can enable show modes from the app and check you have both left and right plugged in correctly and the unit is receiving power.
The power and ground wires are located on the other side of the controller. The power wire is pre-tapped with a fuse and the ground wire is terminated with a ring terminal. You need to connect the power wire to a 12V source in your car. You can use either the accessory power or the permanent power, depending on how often you drive your car. The accessory power is only active when the ignition is on, while the permanent power is always active. The Blughozt controller has a small passive drain on the battery, so if you use permanent power, make sure you drive your car regularly to avoid draining the battery. You can find the accessory power or the permanent power in the front fuse box. You may need to cut and extend the power wire to reach the fuse box. The ground wire can be connected to any metal part of the car chassis. Make sure the connection is clean and tight.
Step 3: Connect the trigger wires to the OEM harness.
The trigger wires are the coloured wires that tell the Blughozt controller what factory functions to perform and when. For example, the red wire is for the brake, the yellow wire is for the indicator, and the white wire is for the reverse. You need to connect each trigger wire to the corresponding 12V source on your car’s OEM harness. You can use either the tail light harness or the trailer harness, depending on which one is more accessible. To find the 12V source for each factory function, you can trace the coloured wire going to the factory globe, or use a 12V test light to probe the wires. For example, to find the 12V source for the brake, you can trace the wire going to the brake globe, or use the test light to probe the wires while pressing the brake pedal. Once you find the 12V source, connect the trigger wire to it using a soldering iron and solder. Make sure the connection is insulated with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing. Repeat this process for all the trigger wires.
Step 4: Connect the resistors to the OEM harness.
The resistors are needed to prevent the ECU from throwing error codes due to the change in the tail lights. You need to connect one resistor to the Brake, indicator and reverse on both the left and right harnesses.
For example, you need to connect one resistor to the brake function on the left harness, and another resistor to the brake function on the right harness. You can connect the resistors to the same wires that you connected the trigger wires to. The resistors have two wires each, one on each end. You need to connect one wire to the 12V source, and the other wire to the ground. You can use a soldering iron and solder to make the connections and insulate them with electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing. Make sure the resistors are securely attached to the harness and do not touch any metal parts of the car. Repeat this process for all the resistors.
Once you have completed all the steps, you can test the tail lights and the Blughozt controller. You can use the Blughozt app on your phone to customize the tail light functions and effects.
